This month’s Friend Crush is, appropriately, a girl-gang crush. Audrey loves the girls in her gang, and they love her back. And we love all of them, as will you, when you’re done reading these interviews.

SUBJECT: Friend Crush

Dear Rookie,

My name is Audrey. I am 14 years old and I live in Seattle. I have two best friends that I have a total friend crush on. Their names are Osa and Anna. The three of us are high school freshmen.

Osa is probably the best friend ever. I love her to death. If I had one day to live, I would spend it with this girl. She’s one of the funniest people I know, and she just rules.

Anna is SO COOL. I love her. I tell her everything. She’s awesome and we are almost like the same person sometimes.

Here’s a picture of all of us together, and although it may not be the most flattering picture ever, I love it, because it’s me with my best friends. <3 [caption id="attachment_6410" align="alignleft" width="540" caption="Audrey, Osa, and Anna">[/caption]

Thanks,
Audrey

P.S. Pleasepleaseplease post this on Rookie. They would FREAK and everyone would just be happy.

ROOKIE: How did you, Osa, and Audrey meet?

AUDREY [crusher]: I met Osa in elementary school. In first grade I would ask her her name every day because I thought she was really cool, but we didn’t really become friends until about third grade, when she came home with me every day after school because her parents were working. I met Anna about two years ago, when her brothers joined School of Rock, which I had already been going to. School of Rock is an extracurricular organization that teaches kids how to play different instruments. We play at venues all around Seattle, and play music including everything from Motown to metal. I play bass, Osa plays guitar, and Anna plays keyboards.

Are you the one who introduced Osa and Anna to each other?

Yes. Once I knew both of them I had a feeling that if I like both of them a lot, they would like each other, too.

What do you guys like to do when you’re together?

We like to watch Twin Peaks, watch ’80s movies, go to shows, go thrift shopping, go to dance parties, and play Uno.

What kinds of shows?

My brother is in a band with Anna’s brothers called Los Gentlemen. We go to their shows, and our friends’ shows, and School of Rock shows. We have also seen Kimya Dawson play, the Lonely Forest, Deerhoof, Brite Futures. The best shows we’ve seen together are Los Gentlemen’s, because we’re with our friends, and we all hang out afterward and it’s great.

What do you love about Osa and Anna?

Osa is sooooooo funny. Everything she says makes me laugh. We write funny songs together and we make jokes about farts. We don’t really have limits with each other. Also, she’s really artsy and cool. We have a lot in common—style, music, art, movies, etc.—and do everything together, and she makes it all fun. She’s like a sister—but one I really really like.

Anna has the coolest style, and I always feel cool when I’m with her. I tell her everrryytthhhiiinngg. I always go to her for advice, whether it’s about clothes or boys. Whenever I don’t know what to wear, I ask Anna. She once told me to “dress witchy, punk rock, vintage, and girly all at the same time.” She is unique—she dresses however she wants, and she has the coolest clothes that I don’t see on anyone else. She’s just really different from everyone else I know.

When I’m with them I feel happy, because I know they love me as much as I love them, which is a great feeling.

ROOKIE: What do you like about Audrey and Anna?

OSA [crushee]: I love Audrey because we understand each other! Everything is always funny to only us. She’s the kind of friend I can call anytime about almost anything. Sometimes I call Audrey if I see a sad commercial about a dog, or if I find something funny on the internet. Audrey is always there for me!

Anna always makes me laugh, and she’s really trustworthy—when I’m talking to her I don’t have to be reserved. She’s also just so stylish and cool and unique and cute and adorable. She’s got an amazing closet full of clothes. She was the Log Lady from Twin Peaks for Halloween, which is just soooo cool.

When did you guys become such a tight-knit group?

The first time I hung out with Audrey was at a friend’s birthday party, in third grade. By the time our parents came to pick us up, we were playing dead bride and groom atop the picnic tables in the park. I guess it was our strangeness that brought us together.

I met Anna when she was over for dinner at Audrey’s. Audrey and I invited her upstairs to watch Pretty in Pink. Of course, upon the realization that we all loved that movie, it was friendship at first sight. That was during the winter of 2009, and by summer we were practically sisters.

Do you remember Audrey’s asking you your name over and over again in first grade?

I don’t really remember that, but I do remember thinking she was a little (a lot) annoying!

Can you say anything else about what it’s like to be friends with those two?

I feel lucky to be friends with two stylish, unique, and wonderful girls. They are both so great. I’m so glad to have them as my friends!

On a totally different subject, the dog in the picture Audrey sent us of you [above, in the heart] is SO CUTE. Can you tell us about her/him?

Cupid! He was my first dog. We got him after months of begging my parents. He is some sort of terrier-mutt, and he’s really sassy. He doesn’t like being told what to do. He has a disease on his mouth, and the combination of crooked teeth and disgusting gum tumors makes him extra adorable.

Here’s a picture I took yesterday after I tried to paint his nails:

ROOKIE: How did you feel when Audrey told you she’d nominated you as a Friend Crush?

ANNA [crushee]: The feeling is definitely mutual. I can be normal when I’m around her and Osa and I totally have friend crushes on both of them. Osa and I feel like Audrey is a shining star.

Osa said it was friendship at first sight when you, she, and Audrey hung out for the first time. Was it the same for you?

Yes, I liked them right away because the first thing we did together was watch Pretty in Pink. I knew it was meant to be.

What do you love most about them?

I love their individuality, quirkiness, and sense of humor. I love how we can laugh over things like farts or cry over really cute pictures of kittens. It’s also nice to be able to share the music I like with people I know will appreciate it. I’ve shared Born Ruffians with them, and Audrey and Osa have shared Brite Futures with me and have also reminded me how great Destiny’s Child really is. These girls are by far the coolest cats I have ever met.

You play keyboards?

Yeah. I really like playing Motown, but I went through a little Elliott Smith phase last year, too. It varies.

What’s your favorite thing to do with Audrey and Osa?

I like going to shows with them…which usually precedes a sleepover. Most of the time when I’m with them I feel like I’m going to cry from laughing so hard. ♦
