Amy Rose is back for the third installment in our series on doing regs ol’ makeup stuff that no one ever taught you how to do…until now! This month she’s showing us some easy eye-makeup tricks, e.g., highlighting brows, using eye shadow as eyeliner, and negotiating the messiness of mascara—all this despite Francois the cat’s best efforts at sabotage. In the coming months, she’ll tackle more-dramatic looks, like the smoky eye, but for now, the basics I MEAN FACE-ICS:
Part One: Priming, and Applying Eye Shadow
Part Two: Highlighting the Brow
*If you don’t have a crease, apply the color right above your eyeball, and below the bone of your brow.
Part Three: Pressing, Wiggling, and Using Shadows as Eyeliner
Part Four: Pencil and Liquid Eyeliners, and Mascara
Products she used:
- e.l.f. Essential Blending Brush
- the Balm Put a Lid On It primer
- Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Sin
- Kat Von D True Romance Eyeshadow Palette in Starstruck
- NYX Ultra Pearl Mania in Pearl
- Maybelline ExpertWear Brow & Eyeliner
- Almay Liquid Eyeliner
- Maybelline Volum’ Express Falsies Mascara
- d.j.v. beautenizer

Log in to replythis time amy rose reminds me of betsy johnson? girl, you seem like you can teach me how to throw a punch and tie a bow in my hair–consecutively.

Log in to replyYour cat. OMG YOUR CAT.
Log in to replyCarry on… :)
I love all you cats, especially the ones that love MY cat.
Log in to replycould she ba any cuter?
Log in to replyAmy Rose, you will be the death of me.
*be
Log in to replyI’m sorry. You make it impossible for me to form actual sentences
your lashes are OFF THE CHARTS!
Log in to replySomething I learned is that you should use your ring finger when applying eye makeup because for some reason, you use less pressure with your ring finger, so it’s better for your eye!
Log in to replyYou’re so amazinggggg ahhhh. Also, your cat is amazing too. He’s freaking adorable, just like your EYESSS.
Log in to replydoes concealer work as a substitute to primer?
Log in to replyaaah thank you for this Amy! The mascara trick is going to help me out so much now!
Log in to replyAmy Rose, you and Francois are both fabulous and awesome. Can’t wait for the next installment!
A question for you/my fellow readers:
My eyeballs desperately dislike having anything too near them–they have a crazy strong closing reflex. (Pretty sure my opthamologist hates me, since I have to pry my lids open with my hands for stuff like the glaucoma test, and even then it takes a few tries on each eye.) Anyway, thanks to that reflex, it takes about twenty minutes to try lining my lower lids, and I rarely want to spend that much time wrestling with just one part of my face. Does anyone have an opinion on lining the top lids but not the bottom, just for an everyday sort of look? Half of me worries it looks too unbalanced and unfinished, but that could be because I’ve never seen a friend not wearing bottom liner.
Log in to replyI wear only top liner most of the time when I wear makeup, and I think it looks totally fine! No one has ever told me it looks weird or unbalanced or anything.
Log in to replyJ’agree (to steal an Anaheed-ism that I love)! I basically never wear bottom liner. I’m a top. Just wanted to show y’all how it twerked.
Log in to replyI stole j’agree from Tavi who stole it from…I think Claire? Is that right, TG?
this is super awesome and my favorite thing on rookie but amy rose, im really sorry, but i must say your eyes look a little furry with the fake lashes. super awesome makeup tutorials, and super cute cat. thank you!
Log in to replyMy sweet person, I know they’re XTREME but I like them that way. Glad you like Francois and me even if we’re a little bonks sometimes!
Log in to replyThese are great. I had to figure out basics like these on my own, and I remember the revelations that came after buying my first real makeup brushes.
Log in to replyI have to say though, considering you are showing natural/subtle eye looks, you could have used better lighting in these videos. In the brow highlighting one, for example, I can’t even see the product you put on. It’s too dark!
Tangerine, duly noted, ya heart head! My apartment is terribly-lit, but I will try to make it WERK better next time.
Log in to replyomg, you are my angel. I’ve been just barely making it through with cheap mascara and chapstick because i didn’t know how to do anything else! Now I feel much more lucid makeup-wise.
Log in to replyAmy rose rocks.. I watch it purely for her witty remarks.. her and francois need a regular slot!
Log in to replyalso.. I think we all did the eyeliner inner lid faux pas when we were in school… haha oh dear. I wish this had been around when I was 14..
Thanks for the videos- I don’t wear makeup but if I ever start, these will be useful.
ALSO, Tavi, in case you’re reading this, I just watched your interview with Stephen Colbert with my Cool Dad, and it was the best.
oh gawd you just saved my life (and my date with this extremely cute boy on thursday).

Log in to replyAaah love Amy Rose so much!
Log in to replyIs your cat named after Françoise Hardy?
Katie xx
http://gravityandshe.blogspot.co.uk
ok I might be crazy but is that a Morrissey sweater you have on in the first video?
Log in to replyYep. Good eye!
Log in to replywell, that quiff is surely unmistakable
Log in to replyAlso, a good way to get rid of goopy blobs of mascara from getting on your lashes is to run the wand over a tissue before you use it. It get’s rid of extra mascara, so then you don’t have to be trying to pick off blobs and then you end up smearing it on your eye shadow and…well, you get the point. xP
Log in to replyamy rose makes my day every day
Log in to replyi think your voice might just be the hottest thing ever..
Log in to replyalso i seriously need you to tell me how you get false eyelashes on, let lone wear them everyday, them bitches be crazy difficult
Log in to replyLiterally been waiting for this video all month!
About that urban legend thing, I heard a similar one with a contact lens that swam round to the back of this lady’s eye, and she had to get her eye taken out to get it off. Thus I have been completely terrified of getting contacts for years!
I love these videos, especially as I just bought my first liquid liner about 2 weeks ago, so super helpful! Thanks!

Log in to replyomg Amy Rose, you are so cool!!!
Log in to replyfor taking off eye-makeup, i use Vaseline and a cotton ball or a Q-tip. even works like magic on waterproof mascara, just an fyi for people like me who end up with eye makeup all over their face because they sneeze while applying..
